The 14th edition of the Black Sheep Film Festival marked its most ambitious chapter yet. It expanded from three to four days and, as a result, welcomed a record 566 attendees at the Paramount Hotel Dubai. This is the highest turnout to date. Attendance also reached new highs for both the Opening Night and the Awards Ceremony. Together, these milestones reflect the festival’s continued growth. They also highlight its role as a key meeting point for filmmakers, students, educators, and industry leaders across the UAE.
Workshops and Industry Talks
Across four days, the festival hosted seven workshops, panels, and talks. These sessions gave audiences direct access to working professionals. Highlights included a producing workshop by award-winning producer Jim Wareck. In addition, Tariq Jaser from Myco delivered a keynote on the future of viewer-driven entertainment. The Spotlight Women in Film conversation also featured Eiman Alkhalifa and Dania Bdeir. Furthermore, a dedicated screenwriters panel with Mohammad Mahmoud focused on storytelling craft and structure.
Screenings and Programming
The festival presented a diverse screening program. It featured films recognised across 15 awards. As a result, it brought together emerging voices and established regional filmmakers. Screenings and discussions ran throughout the program. In turn, they reinforced the festival’s mission to support independent storytelling and encourage industry dialogue.
UAE Student Short Award Launch
A major milestone this year was the launch of the inaugural UAE Student Short Award. It received 39 submissions from institutions including New York University Abu Dhabi, American University of Dubai, University of Wollongong in Dubai, American University of Sharjah, and Dubai International Academy. The award recognised emerging filmmakers. “Headspace” by Jack Careem and Vaino Ritari received the top prize. Meanwhile, two honourable mentions were also awarded to student filmmakers.
Partnerships & International Reach
This year also introduced new partnerships. Through Myco, officially selected films were streamed across the UAE beyond the physical event. In addition, a collaboration with the Oscar-qualifying® HollyShorts Film Festival created an international pathway for winners. As a result, Best Film and Best UAE Student Short gained automatic screening consideration in 2027.
Jury & Guests
The festival’s jury included leading industry voices Nayla Al Khaja, Patrick Caligiuri, and Uzair Merchant. Their participation reinforced the event’s growing professional recognition. Additionally, guests included Nidal Morra, Lyall Gardiner, Rik Aby, and representatives from the United States Embassy.
Partners & Sponsors
Finally, the Black Sheep Film Festival extends special thanks to its partners and sponsors. These include Paramount Hotel Dubai, Advanced Media, Myco, DJI, and HollyShorts Film Festival Dubai. Their support made the festival’s largest edition yet possible.
