OVERVIEW

This intensive audio mixing and mastering bootcamp helps musicians, producers, podcasters, and filmmakers elevate their sound. Learn advanced techniques in EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and modulation, and master tracks using industry-standard tools from SSL, Waves, and iZotope. Guided by experienced audio engineers in SAE’s professional studios, you’ll progress from foundational mix concepts to creating release-ready audio. By the end, participants will confidently produce polished, balanced mixes and masters, enhancing musical releases, podcasts, and film projects with professional-quality sound.

Course Outline:

Week 1: The Mix Foundation: Setup & Balance

  • Optimize your listening environment.
  • Understand the principles of building a mix.
  • Set up sessions and subgroups.
  • Balance levels and pan instruments.

Week 2: Sculpting with EQ & Dynamics

  • Understand the concept of frequency juggling.
  • Use EQ effectively.
  • Set up a compressor, noise gate, and de-esser.

Week 3: Creating Space: Reverb, Delay & Modulation

  • Time reverb and delay to a track.
  • Use reverb to create depth and the Haas effect for width.
  • Modulate instruments for character.

Week 4: Mix Consolidation & Preparation for Mastering

  • Mix and process with subgroups.
  • Use automation to bring a mix to life.
  • Prepare a final mix for mastering (leaving headroom, printing versions).

Week 5:  Mastering Foundations: EQ, Compression & Loudness

  • Understand the difference between mixing and mastering.
  • Apply broad-stroke EQ and compression on the master bus.
  • Use a limiter to achieve competitive loudness safely.

Week 6: Advanced Mastering & Delivery

  • Use advanced mastering tools (e.g., exciters, imagers).
  • Compare and critique masters against commercial references.
  • Generate final files for different platforms.

Learning Outcome:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze and optimize a listening environment for critical mix decisions.
  • Configure a DAW session with efficient routing, subgroups, and effects to streamline your workflow.
  • Apply core processing techniques—including EQ, compression, and gating—to shape individual elements within a mix.
  • Utilize time-based and modulation effects creatively to add depth, dimension, and movement.
  • Construct a balanced, cohesive stereo mix and prepare it for mastering.
