OVERVIEW

This course is designed for beginners and those at entry level seeking to delve into the captivating realm of modern electronic music. Throughout this programme, you will explore the foundational concepts that underpin electronic music creation, ranging from working with MIDI and audio to beat-making, sequencing, sampling and synthesis. Through hands-on exercises, practical demonstrations, and guided instruction, you will gain proficiency in electronic music production, including crafting captivating melodies, designing unique soundscapes, and arranging simple compositions. By the end of this course, you will have acquired a solid understanding of the fundamental principles of electronic music production, empowering you to confidently pursue your musical aspirations and embark on your creative endeavours in the ever-evolving world of electronic music.

  • Ableton Live 11
  • Session 1: Introduction to Ableton Live 11
    • Connecting MIDI devices and setting up user preferences.
    • Getting to know Live: Session and Arrangement view.

    Session 2: Understanding Musical Concepts

    • Rhythm, pitch, and song structure.
    • Introduction to MIDI sequencing and working with clips.

    Session 3: Introduction to Rhythm

    • Understanding tempo and drum sounds: kicks, claps, hi-hats, and percussion.
    • Working with Drum Synth.

    Session 4: Rhythm Continued

    • Working with Drum Rack.
    • Creating complex drum loops using note velocity and groove presets.
    • Recording drum beats using a MIDI keyboard and quantizing.

    Session 5: Introduction to Pitch (Melody and Bass)

    • Understanding keys and scales.
    • Learning to use Live’s scale function to compose melodies.
    • Understanding different instrument categories and using them appropriately.

    Session 6: Pitch Continued

    • Using a MIDI keyboard and Live’s MIDI scale effects to record a performance.
    • Understanding clip effects (invert and reverse).
    • Understanding note quantization and velocity.
    • Introduction to subtractive synthesis with Analog.

    Session 7: Introduction to Sampling

    • Using Live’s ‘Simpler’ instrument to manipulate audio samples.
    • Introduction to time-based audio effects: Reverb and Delay.
      • Understanding reverb with listening examples.
      • How to use reverb in Live: inserts vs sends.
      • Understanding delays with listening examples.
      • How to use delay in Live: inserts vs sends.

    Session 8: Introduction to EQ and Compression

    • Understanding frequency bands and spectral analysis.
    • How EQ shapes sound: cleaning or enhancing an instrument or recording.
    • Understanding compression: what it does and learning sidechain compression.

    Session 9: Introduction to Mixing Concepts

    • Understanding volume levels and panning.
    • Mixing with pink noise.

    Session 10: Using Automation

    • Creating movement in your tracks.
    • Recording live automation using a MIDI keyboard.
    • Saving and exporting your work correctly.
