SAE-Tonmeister (Masters Level)

The SAE Tonmeister is a unique programme taking audio education to the next level. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge and highest academic qualification required for a successful career in the music and audio industries. The SAE Tonmeister programme is aimed at those who are concerned with acoustic design, theory and practice of sound recording, and wish to develop their musical knowledge and skills to a post graduate level. The programme will produce graduates who are well versed in the entertainment business, sound engineering, music production, music arrangement, management skills and acoustics design.
In addition, they will develop an appreciation of developmental and aesthetic aspects of creative media in recent years and the likely course of future developments. They will have self critical awareness of their professional capabilities and appreciate the need for continual personal and professional development.

- minimum age 18;
and - completion of a Bachelor (Hons) degree;
and - some music theory knowledge and proficiency in at least one instrument;
or - mature age students with a minimum of 8 years industry experience and a proven track record. Please send CD or DVD your work and include complete CV.
Duration
12 months full time
Assessment method and award
Practical
- will involve progressive assessment and the submission of studio logs;
- students undertake a substantial recording project within the guidelines set by the Institute
- students undertake a major music arrangement project
Theoretical
- all Tonmeister students must undertake one specialist written research projects and one complete musical project
- pass and complete all individual degree modules and complete a final examination
Award
- In order to qualify for the SAE-Tonmeister, candidates need to have successfully completed a Bachelor (Hons) degree and passed the final examination with a score of 80% or more.
- award is the 'Tonmeister' Masters Level
Direct entry
Graduates who have successfully completed the SAE degree from other SAE Institutes can continue with the masters degree at SAE Oxford. Graduates with similar qualifications from other Institutions can apply for advanced standing in the Tonmeister programme.

TM-403 - Industry Perspectives & IssuesThis module surveys the structure and operations of the music and general entertainment industries and considers the policies and attitudes of the industries as they relate to the world market. It establishes some advanced methodologies, skills and attitudes which are essential to successful research in the field, and which enhance the ability to identify, analyse and contribute intelligently to issues currently influencing the industry and the wider community.
TM-404 - Cultural PerspectivesThis module aims to establish a sense of aesthetic perspective, to cultivate a sensitivity to cultural nuances, norms, and imperatives over past ages, and to stimulate an appreciation of the ways various audio media have been used and integrated in the past to 'capture' images of human experience. In considering the roles of music producers, musicians, music arrangers, entertainment managers and other music industry executives it examines the work and practice of a selection of successful professionals who have made major contributions as professionals in their specialised fields.
TM-401 - Business and Legal StudiesIn addition to other components, this module focuses on advanced management skills with regard to administration, finance, personnel and forward production planning. Also dealt with are issues regarding promotion, publicity and marketing and students are given a thorough grounding in the legal aspects of the entertainment industry.
TM-402 - Advanced Music Recording & ProductionThis module is designed to introduce students to the concept of classical recording and advanced production techniques. Students gain supervised professional experience in our extensive facilities. As a result students can apply their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in any professional setting. A significant part of this module is music theory and music arrangement, for various styles of music.
TM-405 - Acoustic Design and TheoryThis module is designed to introduce students to acoustic design principles for all types of acoustic applications. Subjects include: Advanced acoustic theory, design acoustics for concert halls, working with architects, CAD drawing, acoustics and music, creating special acoustic environments and more.
TM-406 - Specialised Research ProjectThis section of the programme allows students to undertake an approved masters level research project. It is, in effect, a double module and is designed to show a student's ability to initiate, implement and evaluate a substantial creative/ technical project. The project will be supervised by a advanced member of staff approved by the Manager
