Bachelor of Arts of Web Development
The degree will consolidate the students knowledge already gained during the first year of the web development course and further their academic skills. To broaden the learning experience beyond the purely vocational type training, by including a wider knowledge base and research-based educational experience. The web development degree programme can only be taken at the various approved SAE degree centres.
Aims
The Bachelor of Arts of Web Development comprises the first year of Web Development course plus a second year of degree level studies. This degree is taught and administered by SAE Institute and validated by Middlesex University.
The degree can be taken over a period of two years as an intensive programme. The BA degree is a direct path to higher post graduate degrees.

- minimum age 17;
- completion of year 12 high school certificate (HSC) or its equivalent ; or
- mature age students over 21 years; or
- on receipt of suitable evidence, SAE shall seek to admit all prospective students (via special entry) who are considered to have a reasonable chance of success in the programme.

- all BA (Hons) students must undertake a specialist written research project; and
- pass and complete all individual degree modules
Award
In order to qualify for the Bachelor degree, candidates need to reach an overall mark of 360 Middlesex University credit points.
Second year direct entry
Graduates who have successfully completed the 1st Year Bachelor of Web Development Degree from other SAE Institutes can continue with the degree at SAE approved degree centers. Graduates with similar qualifications can apply for advanced standing in the degree programme.

DES1101 – Principles of Design
A foundation course in the application of design principles and elements that is fundamental to all design activities. Students will enhance their knowledge and skills to effectively apply these principles and elements as well as critically evaluate their design processes.
DES1102 – Communication Design
This course introduces the key elements of communication that facilitate effective communication on a personal and professional basis. Students will examine communication theories and apply these practically for effective communication particularly within the multimedia and interactive entertainment environments.
DEV1101 - Multimedia Development I
In this course, students are introduced to authoring fundamentals. Students will study the core elements of authoring multimedia and the factors that effect multimedia product development. Topics include working with timelines, creating reusable objects, working to constraints of media and creating a variety of output formats.

DES1103 – Interface Design
Students are introduced to key theories, concepts and methodologies in user interface design. They will critically analyse, evaluate and develop a range of multimedia interfaces to develop an understanding of how to design interfaces that are interactive, engaging and appropriate for specified target groups.
MED1102 - Principles of 2D Animation
This is an introductory course in 2D animation. Students will study the historical context of 2D animation, its current applications, animation principles, and styles and methods of animation – with emphasis on 2D digital animation.
DEV1201 - Multimedia Development II
In this course, students are introduced to programming fundamentals. Students will study the core elements of programming, the factors that effect application development and basic problem solving strategies. Topics include, syntax, variable declarations, data types, control structures and modular design.
DEV2202 - Multimedia Development III
Multimedia Development III introduces students to advanced multimedia development theories, techniques, and practices that will examine scripting languages used in contemporary authoring environments for high-level interactivity and media control. Emerging delivery technologies will also be examined.

DEV2301 - Multimedia Development IV
This course focuses on the problems and issues involved in developing web-based applications. The problems of state, persistence of variables, and management via caching, and security issues are discussed and solutions examined for effective deployment.
DEV3302 - Database Applications
This course provides students with an understanding of database technology and provides the skills to design, implement and use databases for use on the World Wide Web. Fundamental database issues, such as database management, administration and security issues are examined.
BWD3304: Web Development 3
Students will learn the basics of client-side scripting in this unit. Studies will focus on how to improve the user experience through the use of modern scripting technologies by creating interactive and intuitive interfaces.
DEV3302 - Database Applications
This course provides students with an understanding of database technology and provides the skills to design, implement and use databases for use on the World Wide Web. Fundamental database issues, such as database management, administration and security issues are examined.
DES2201 - Interaction Design
Focuses the student’s design studies on the theories, strategies and constructs that inform the effectiveness of human-computer interaction. Includes the design, development and evaluation of different interactions within the context of applied multimedia environments.

SAE2000 Creative Media Practice
This unit will guide students through investigation of the structure and operations of the cultural industries. Students will explore relationships between culture and consumers of culture and the implications for the marketing of creative media products in an aim to adapt the student’s skill set to the wider industry.

SAE3130 Advanced Web Practice
This unit will provide a structured opportunity for students to undertake a large-scale self-directed creative based practical or investigative project that displays the depth and breadth of their abilities. During this process students will establish methodologies, skills and attitudes essential to undertaking successful research in the field. This will give students a chance to explore and reflect on the professional as well as the relevant theoretical, creative and logistical considerations within a project of this scale.

NEM3305: New Media Internship
Enables students to examine and analyse first-hand the business methodologies, communication models, production work-flows and design strategies used specifically in the New Media industry. Students will also gain an understanding of the concepts that underlie successful business and marketing strategies, with a particular emphasis placed on professional practice.
